The Port of Savannah is the third-busiest container gateway in the United States. The port handled about 5.7 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2025, with container traffic moving primarily through the massive Garden City Terminal, the largest single-operator container terminal in North America. Savannah also has a relatively balanced mix of imports and exports, creating a steady flow of international 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft high cube containers through marine terminals, depots, trucking yards, warehouses, and distribution centers throughout the region.

Savannah is also one of the most rail-oriented container ports in the country. Its 85-acre Mason Mega Rail Terminal is the largest on-terminal intermodal facility in North America, with 18 working tracks, capacity for 2 million TEUs annually, and 42 double stack trains per week operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern. Containers can move from vessel to departing rail in roughly 20 to 22 hours, allowing large volumes of marine shipping containers to quickly move between the port and inland markets while maintaining a substantial pool of container equipment in the Savannah area. Savannah has some of the lowest priced shipping containers in the country, but trucking tends to be more expensive here, so customers are encouraged to manage their own pick-up when possible.
